During the winter of 1996-'97 Karin Bos worked as an artist in residence in Barcelona. Being abroad made her wonder about the cultural variety of semantics. It poses questions such as 'Does she see what you see?' and 'Do you see what you think you see?' She created 'Ninety-six ways of lying / ninety-six ways of telling the truth'. The series of ninety-six small oil paintings is based on a linocut, which shows an archaic painter. This exercise of variation is a result of Karin Bos being intrigued by the ability of the arts to express different significations at the same time.
