His father, a passionate amateur photographer, gave him permission to play with his 4"x5" camera. Looking through the frosted glass, he got the experience of the mirror image and the out of focus of the reality. In those days there were no academies for photography, so he followed several elementary courses on photography in The Hague. He then furthered his art by learning through experience. After serving in the army, he worked for 10 years as professional photographer and cinematographer at the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam. 
In the early 70's he started working as free-lance photographer. Besides making free work, such as portraits and travel photography, he was employed by sports magazines and record companies. 
Close to 2000 covers for classical and pop records were made by him. 
In 1989 he initiated the Fotofestival Naarden, which nowadays is the most prestigious photography event in the Netherlands. 
Besides his work as photographer, He has a 25 year career as designer for wall-paper, carpets and curtains.
